What We Love About Reno & Sparks

"Reno has magnificently been transformed to a place you will never forget"

I admit it could be a pain sometimes driving through Downtown Reno in the summer.

Main streets are usually closed to accommodate street parties and Harley Davidson parades.  But amidst all these little pains, it sure has been worth it.

For Reno has magnificently been transformed to a place you will never forget.

I wanted to share to you bits and pieces of Reno in the last two years (taken by my father and brother):

Bibo Coffee Company: Best Coffee in Reno

Bibo2

Where:                     680 Mt Rose St. Reno,NV (775-329-2114)

Downtown Location:   50 W Liberty St. Reno,NV (775-329-3322)

"Bibo's? Is that the one near Mogul Mouse (A funny sounding ski shop in Moana Lane)?  I curiously asked Gayla who I was about to have coffee with.  "Umm, how about Starbucks at Kietzke?" I retorted, " No, no you don't understand I want to show you this coffee place.  You'll like it. Trust me."

And with that assurance I half-heartedly complied to meet her at Bibo coffee house.

That happened a year ago.  I've never been to any other coffee house ever since.

The first thing I noticed with Bibo's is the variety of people that comes there.   This was no accident I later learned from the owner "My wife and I wanted to create a place where people of shared or varied interests could come together outside a bar or a club.  We've got Doctors, blue collar guys, artists, students, real estate people, we have office meetings, we have families.  And that's really  what we strive to create--a gathering place."  Paul Martin said.

Paul Martin was a golf professional who lived at Tahoe with his wife Debbie for fifteen years. Then moved to Reno and just "fell in love with the town."

I asked him how he got started with Bibo's:

"We were just trying to figure out how we can just make Reno even better, even more of a place we wanted to be.  So we started kind of looking around figuring out things that matched my skills and something that we could feel like was a contribution to Reno.  And so we looked around and came up with a coffee house.  It was just a really good match of a place where people of shared and varied interests could come together outside of a bar or a club."

The place is also widely praised for it's urban-contemporary design yet not lacking in warmth.  Paul sought out architect Jack Hawkins to accomplish this.

"It was really important for us to keep a sense of Reno. We wanted to keep the theme going with some original photos of Reno that my wife's grandfather took back in the 30's and 40's and all those things give us a sense of place, rather than you know just anywhere U.S.A."

On one of my lazy afternoons at Bibo's I met a lady who gladly explained to me why bibo's coffee tastes much better. "Other franchised coffee houses over-roast their beans to get the maximum aroma. Bibo's don't have to do that  simply because the beans are already top quality."

Paul later explained to me the process "We source out to really unique roasters with premium beans. What they do is one of them travels to India every year to buy our espresso and also our monsoon medley (*personal favorite). He goes directly to the growers buying their best beans but he's also giving them the best price. Then we deal with quality roasters who are going to roast those beans."

"And it's also about the small steps we do within the store.  We get coffee delivered once a week so it's always really fresh.  We don't grind before it's time.  The grinding only takes place when it's brewed, so it's always fresh and tasty.

So it's kind of all those things- it's the small steps.

And when the guys are making their lattes, we don't hold milk.  It's like if you were going to make a latte or a cappuccino the milk is steamed for that precise drink at that moment.  And the espresso is pulled and ground at that exact moment, it's not held over.  It might take us a bit longer but it's all those qualities assurance that kind of adds into it."

Now can anybody blame the author for making Bibo's my half-way home?

Waking up in Reno

Dsc00489

There are few things in life more uplifting than waking up to a whole new world of blissful white.  This is the feeling you get when dozing off the night before with the often times dull brown surroundings ( Reno is in a high desert altitude ) and waking up amidst a completely different, joyous chorus of snow covering everything the eye can see- makes you feel exhilaratingly calm for some reason.   Maybe its the color, or the complete  transformation of the character of your surrounding.  Almost makes you feel like a new born- makes you feel renewed.  Forgiven.

That's what so delightful about living here.    Having four seasons makes this place feel like  a Mecca of flavorful dishes.  It gives us something to look forward to.  Four different seasons giving birth to four completely different activities.

I was having dinner with a couple of friends from Northern California.  Having just conquered the mountains of Tahoe with their snowboards and skis I asked them how often they would go to the mountains in the winter season, "seven to ten" they replied, and quickly added,"when the snow comes late.."  ohh ok.  "but in a winter season like this (apparently we had an early  snowfall) we'll be coming here at least fifteen times.

I began to do the math.  15 times  3.5 hours= 52.5 hours of travel (via land).

And for us 'Reno-ites'? an hour of drive times fifteen.  I now understand what they were ranting about: 'Man-you're-one-hour-away-from-Tahoe-what-aren't-you-here-everyday!'

'I am more of summer guy.' I silently replied.

That's the beauty of living here.  Reno is like an unfettered father equally loving his twelve kids.

Two Reno blogs that very well deserve a click or two

With the ever increasing and over saturated information in the web, sometimes it can be hard to find what you're looking for.  And if you 'google' it  chances are that thousands and thousands of pages will come up.  It can get pretty frustrating, especially if what you're searching for is pretty simple, say, 'best local restaurants in Reno'.

But don't fret; blogs are here to the rescue!  Well, not every time but definitely blogs have a more honest and transparent approach to 'reporting' things.

Here are some of local blogs that I find charmingly amusing and useful:

Reno and Its Discontents- (the most visited blog in Reno)

'Contributors are people who live here and care about the community' , posting on a variety of topics including downtown restaurants, nightspots, concerts, art exhibits, and other events and activities taking place in our neighborhoods'

Ann Onn Everything- Interesting perspectives from a local on just about everything happening in Reno (from the big Nevada-Boise game to the Mack trial to the freeway repair problems we never seem to run out of)

'I have lived in Reno since the early 1970s. As the title implies, I have an opinion on everything. I reserve the right to change my opinion as my information changes.'

And yes, if you are looking for some good local restaurant reviews you can find it here: RGJ.com restaurant reviews

The Most Honest Cafe in Reno: Franz's Backstube Austrian Cafe

One word to describe  my experience at Franz's Backstube Bakeshop: Authentic.
Authentic to the flavors of Austria and those European countries that share the Austrian's taste for fine pastries. " We even want the pictures on the wall to be authentic to Austria", said Nina Hauser to one of the many magazines that featured the cafe.

Dsc00059

Franz's has had a colorful and extensive experience with his craft.  He advanced his skills in pastry by attending the Richmond Institute in Switzerland before becoming the pastry chef at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1974. He later joined Caesar's Palace
in Las Vegas and then the MGM Grand, now the Grand Sierra Summit.

One of the popular dishes they offer is the Goulash (what's a Goulash?)
It's a recipe given to Franz Hauser by a Hungarian friend. "It's made in a large stem kettle," Nina Hauser said. " It simmers forever.  People in the shops around us know when we're making it because of the aroma."
The goulash is served  with a French roll and portions come in a cup or a bowl.  You also can choose a chicken salad or tuna salad or quiche.  While you lunch , you can eye the pastry case in anticipation of dessert.

Which brings me to my next point. The Fruit Tart: to try to exlpain it in words would be a crime.

Dsc00066

Inside the cafe the interior is friendly, cozy & cheerful. Austrian designs line the walls. Beside the pastry display a rotating glass tray holds some of the other cakes and the rack at the front is full of house-baked breads.

If you do decide on coming and need some company.  You know who to call. I'll be more than happy to accompany you (if you buy me at least 2 fruits tarts)

One of the wildest rides in Reno-Tahoe: Flume Trail

'When a man comes to the mountains, he comes home.'

                                                                                         -John Muir

On our way to Spooner Lake. The first view of the lake if you're coming from 395 South Mt Rose.

And there it was my final hurrah for the summer. My buddy Joel calls me Sunday night, inviting me to once again ascend Flume trail ( at Spooner Lake in South Lake Tahoe)

I was here a little over a month ago. I was part of a group of seven eager men aiming to conquer the treacherous 14 mile bike ride (give or take depending on how far you want to go) fortunately, every one of us came back alive. But only two went home victorious.- reaching the finish line. (allow me to brag that the author was one of them )

Dsc00039

I couldn’t say no to the second invitation. I just had to have my one last taste of Tahoe before the winter cold sets in.

At Spooner Lake on our way to Flume Trail.

Flume trail is a lot like the neighborhood bakeshop that you have never heard of but has the best fruit tart in the world. In this case, one of the best mountain bike trails in the
United States.

If not for my buddy Joel I doubt very much if I would find this place on my own.  It's a great place to bring the family whether you're walking, hiking or biking.

Dsc00032

Dsc00027

It’s been reported that Flume Trail is one of the top 40 mountain bike experiences in the

United States (by a major adventure magazine). I have no doubt that it is.

Flume trail is 1600 Ft. above the east

shore of Lake Tahoe and only half a mile away from the shoreline.

Dsc00045A peak from above

And when you do reach the 1600 ft level, the gorgeous white sand beach of sand harbor will politely overwhelm you with its incomparable beauty.  The hard part is not gazing down at the beach while riding.  (its dangerous to look away from your path, especially if its just a few feet that separates you and the thousand feet drop) The experience simply is exhilarating. I cannot think of any other word.

Dsc00049

Dsc00050

When I was enjoying all this beauty I couldn't help but recite to myself this beautiful quote from the book Wild at Heart.

' The spiritual life cannot be made suburban.  It is always frontier, and we who live in it must accept and even rejoice that it remains untamed. '

The Best Breakfast in America is found in Reno(according to Esquire magazine)

I need to make a disclaimer. I have not been to this place, but it is not my fault. This week I asked 2 of my friends to go with me to Peg's but for some reason they couldn't.  But by looking at this picture it is safe to assume that this is THE best breakfast in America.

Here's the introduction by the author...

"I've been to forty-six of the fifty states, visited most every American city, except Houston. I lived in the South and passed twenty years in the heartland. That's why I can declare that the best breakfast in America is the one you buy at Peg's Glorified Ham & Eggs. You should get on a plane and go to Reno just to eat there."

Reno Featured in one of the most read Magazine in the United States

It was around 11:00 PM Sept. 30.  I was in one of the most crowded social places in Reno (Walmart) browsing through the only magazine I read. Halfway through I noticed a familiar picture I see every time I drop off my folks for their 'weekly' Downtown dates. It was our beloved RENO Downtown signature sign!

  Renorestless1007lg_2

"I'm sure it's something ridiculous again, maybe about the infamous show RENO 911", I thought.  But no.  It was an article made by Tom Chiarella (warning: there are a few foul words in the article) it is the best and most honest article I have ever read about Reno.

"I want to say this clearly: You cannot deconstruct Reno. It's ruddy and rock hard, self-evident and openhearted. Reno is of a whole. It is a city, not an event. It is clean, safe, small, open, easy to get around in, cheap, seedy in the right ways, elegant in its own small measures. The airport? Intensely easy. Crowds? None that you can't handle. Hotels? None over a hundred dollars. There are mountains -- real ones -- lush, snowcapped, visually magnetic, utterly proximate. In Vegas, the mountains are dead hills in the distance. You know where you are when you're in Reno. You are in the new Vegas."

300 Sunny days in Reno,NV

People often talk about sunsets and sunrises. How it could just make you feel alive.
Sunrise and sunsets have always been used as a backdrop for poetry, painting, arts. Those things that feed our souls.

There is something about the sun that just makes me feel alive. Haven't you noticed why it seems that every time we lie down on the beach or stroll around the park in the noonday sun.- We just feel a lot better. Try it. When you feel exhausted or overwhelmed with the everyday happenings. Go outside. Be quiet. Lie down on the grass. See if it changes anything.

I was in Northern California last week. Had so much fun. But after 3 days the Cloudy skies began to take its toll on me. Maybe I missed my Reno Sky.

Reno averages 300 sunny days a year. But unlike Las Vegas, Reno's hot weather is much more bearable.  Plus, Lake Tahoe is just around the corner if you do feel like its getting too hot.

With 300 sunny days, Reno may just be the perfect summer getaway in North America. It has been called, " America's adventure place". The local government has been actively renovating the image of Reno from being ' The little Vegas of North America'   To  'America's Adventure Place' and believe me they are serious about making this happen.

They have rejuvenated Downtown Reno to be more family-oriented rather than 'just the casinos'. They have made it possible for people to stroll along Truckee river, kayak,mt. bike, and eat at your favorite Eat-all-you can Buffet all in one corner, literally.

With 300 days of sunshine. It just might mean 300 days of eternal bliss.
